2000 Sophomore Survey
The 2000 Sophomore Survey was distributed via the web during February and March. Paper copies of the survey were mailed to those who didn’t respond on the web. Eligible sophomores must have completed between 45 and 59 hours, and have earned at least 30 hours at Western. The response rate was 51%; 214 students responded. The Office of University Planning conducted and analyzed the survey.

- 93% of sophomore respondents evaluated the overall education at Western as excellent or good.
- 90% of sophomore respondents rated the overall quality of instruction as excellent or good.
- At least 75% of sophomore respondents rated the faculty as “excellent” or “very good” on each of the questions referring to the Principles Seven Principles for Good Undergraduate Teaching. Setting high expectations for you to learn received the highest rating (90%), while encouraging student-faculty interaction in and out of class received the lowest (75%) rating in this group of questions.
- Computer technology (access to the Internet, facilities, hours of service) generally received high marks (over 70% excellent or good).
Advising and Career Assistance
- Overall advising services were rated as excellent or good by 73% of respondents. The advising question receiving the lowest rating was “accurate information about degree requirements and course sequencing” (66%).
- A large number of respondents (25%) did not know about or did not use Career Services. Those using the services were generally very satisfied (77% excellent or good).

- 93% or more rated the hours of operation, the databases and collections, and library services overall as excellent or good.
- Only 65% rated the training to use the library as good or excellent.
